CSI Unveils New Hypertension Guidelines: Tips to Keep Blood Pressure in Check

The Cardiological Society of India (CSI), at its 76th Annual Conference in Lucknow, introduced new guidelines for managing hypertension. The emphasis is on tackling high blood pressure through lifestyle changes before turning to medications. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:

1. Understanding Healthy Blood Pressure Levels

  • Ideal Blood Pressure: Below 120/80 mmHg.
  • Prehypertension: Readings around 140/90 mmHg can often be managed with lifestyle adjustments.

2. Lifestyle Modifications Come First

Experts recommend making the following changes to control blood pressure:

  • Dietary Adjustments: Reduce salt intake and focus on balanced meals.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity is crucial.
  • Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight helps regulate BP.
  • Reduce Alcohol: Limiting alcohol consumption can significantly improve heart health.

For young and healthy individuals, maintaining blood pressure below 120/80 through these methods is the goal.

3. When Medications Are Needed

  • If lifestyle changes fail, or if blood pressure readings are consistently above 140/90 mmHg, medications may be necessary.
  • Individuals with heart conditions or complications might require early medical intervention, even for slightly elevated readings.

4. Monitoring Blood Pressure at Home

  • If you notice high readings, stay calm and recheck after a short interval.
  • Occasional spikes might be errors, but consistent readings above 140/90 need medical attention.
  • Ensure your home BP monitor is calibrated with a hospital-grade device for accuracy.

5. Public Awareness Initiatives

Dr. A Muruganathan proposed setting up free BP monitoring stations at public spaces like malls, bus stands, and railway stations. This would raise awareness and help detect undiagnosed hypertension cases early.

6. Making BP Monitors Accessible

Affordable, locally manufactured BP monitors, much like mobile phones, could encourage regular monitoring.

7. Specialised Hypertension Centres

Dedicated clinics for hypertension, similar to those for diabetes or respiratory issues, could help manage the growing number of patients effectively.

8. Seniors and Hypertension

  • For individuals over 80 years old, slightly higher blood pressure levels might be acceptable based on overall health.
  • For others, keeping systolic BP around 135 mmHg and diastolic BP at 80 mmHg is recommended.

9. Role of Family in Managing Hypertension

Dr. Sangram S. Biradar emphasised the role family members play:

  • Encourage healthy eating habits and regular exercise.
  • Prepare low-sodium meals.
  • Ensure medication adherence and provide emotional support.

Why It Matters

Hypertension, often called a “silent killer,” affects over 33% of Indians, many of whom remain undiagnosed. Early detection and proper management can save lives and reduce long-term complications like heart attacks or strokes.

By following these guidelines and adopting a proactive approach, individuals can take control of their blood pressure and overall health.
