A Dangerous Mystery Disease Hits Congo
An unknown illness with flu-like symptoms has killed almost 150 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The deaths were reported between November 10 and November 25 in the Panzi health zone of Kwango province.
What Are the Symptoms?
The disease causes:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Coughing
- Anemia (low red blood cells)
Health officials say it is spreading quickly, and many sick people have died at home without getting medical care.
What’s Being Done?
A medical team has been sent to the area to collect samples and figure out what’s causing the illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also helping with the investigation.
Key Warnings:
- Avoid contact with the bodies of people who have died from the disease.
- More medical supplies are urgently needed in the rural Panzi health zone.
Why Is This Worrying?
The disease is hitting women and children the hardest. Many patients cannot access treatment because the region lacks medicine and healthcare facilities. The death toll is rising fast, and health experts are deeply concerned.
This outbreak comes as the DRC is already dealing with other health crises, including an mpox outbreak and a few cases of Ebola.
What’s Next?
Health experts are rushing to identify the disease and stop its spread. For now, it is critical to raise awareness and bring medical aid to the affected areas.
