Five first-year MBBS students were killed, and two others critically injured, after their car collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus in Alappuzha district on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 9 pm when the students, traveling in a Chevrolet Tavera, were reportedly speeding. The collision’s impact was so severe that it left the car utterly mangled, with shattered windows and twisted metal. The bus, traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam, also sustained significant damage to its front.
Emergency responders had to cut through the wreckage of the car to retrieve the victims, who were identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep. Three of the students died instantly, while two others succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital. The two surviving students were rushed to the Alappuzha Medical College hospital for treatment.
The students, who were in their first year at Vandanam Medical College, were reportedly overtaking another vehicle when the car skidded, braked suddenly, and collided with the oncoming bus, according to local witnesses. Four bus passengers sustained minor injuries but are in stable condition.
Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident.
